JAXA unveils space probe for Mars moon project

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency unveils a space probe to be used for the Martian Moons eXploration project at the Tanegashima Space Center in Minamitane in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Aug. 13, 2026. An H3 rocket carrying the probe will be launched possibly this fall for the five-year mission, which aims to collect samples from Mars' moon Phobos and return them to Earth.

KOMAKI, Japan - About 450 members of the Air Self-Defense Force return home to an ASDF base in Komaki, Aichi Prefecture, from Kuwait on Feb. 15 after Japan formally ended its five-year reconstruction aid operations in Iraq. The ASDF members had carried out withdrawal-related tasks at a Kuwaiti base from early December after Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada issued an order in late November for the return to Japan of a contingent of airmen who had airlifted goods and personnel for multinational forces and the United Nations to and from Iraq.
